South Africa Unemployment Rate Rises In Q3

South Africa's unemployment rate climbed for a second quarter running in the three months to September, figures from Statistics South Africa showed on Tuesday. The unemployment rate rose to 27.5 percent from 27.2 percent in the second quarter and 26.7 percent in each of the two quarters before that, the latest Quarterly Labor Force Survey showed. The latest figure is the highest in four quarters. The rate was 27.7 percent in the third quarter of 2017.

In the third quarter, the number of unemployed rose by 127,000 persons from the second quarter to 6.2 million. Employment grew by 92,000 persons to 16.4 million. Compared to a year ago, employment grew by 1.2 percent, while unemployment decreased by 1,000 persons.
