Italy Consumer Confidence Unexpectedly Improves; Business Confidence Weakens

Italy's consumer confidence improved in October as households were more positive regarding their future, survey data from the statistical office ISTAT showed on Tuesday.

The consumer confidence index rose to 116.6 from 116.1 in September. Economists had forecast a score of 115.1.

The future component of the index increased, while the economic component was largely stable. The personal and current indicators dropped and the balance showing expectations on unemployment decreased.

Indicators reflecting inflation expectations for the past the future increased.

Meanwhile, business confidence weakened to 102.6 from 103.6 with the measure for manufacturing easing to 104.9 from 105.6.

Morale improved in the construction sector, while confidence eroded in the services and retail trade sectors.

Separately, the ISTAT reported that the economy stagnated in the third quarter after a 0.2 percent increase in the pervious three months.
