Hong Kong Visible Trade Gap Widens In September

Hong Kong's visible trade deficit widened in September from a year ago, figures from the Census and Statistics Department showed Thursday.

The visible trade deficit increased to HK$47.7 billion from HK$44.7 billion in the previous year.

The value of total exports of goods increased 4.5 percent annually after an increase of 13.1 percent in August. Likewise, the value of imports advanced 4.8 percent, following August's increase of 16.4 percent.

In the third quarter, exports climbed 1.5 percent and imports moved up 2.5 percent, data showed.

A government spokesman said looking forward, the impacts of the US-Mainland trade conflicts on Hong Kong's exports will likely turn more visible in the coming months, particularly so if the trade conflicts are to escalate further.

The government will continue to monitor the situation closely, spokesman added.
